LEIGHTRONIX Tip: UltraNEXUS-HD Zone Templates
By John Gonzalez

With only so many hours in the day, sometimes one screen of information just isn’t enough to inform your audience. For UltraNEXUS-HD™ series users, this isn’t a problem. With the included UltraNEXUS-HD Zone Templates feature, up to three zones of content can be displayed at the same time. What’s more, the TOTAL INFO-HD™ dynamic content service easily works with any of these zones for those times that you can’t generate your own graphics. It’s never been easier to get your message out there.

Setting Up Scheduled Event Zones

To start filling zones with content, you’ll first need to prepare a schedule in the UltraNEXUS-HD’s management software, WinLGX™ 7. After logging in to the software, head to the Library resource folder and select the video you wish to add zones to. From there, navigate to the Properties View panel and click the Playback format field to reveal an additional button on the right.

The Playback Format window provides much of the information needed to prepare an UltraNEXUS-HD Zone Template. Click New and type in the desired name for your new preset. Select the resources for each zone using the drop down menu below the preview area.

Zone 1 Zone 2 Zone 3
This shows the videos or slides that will play in Zone 1 — the main part of the screen. Zone 2 refers to the bottom lower third of the screen. Zone 3 refers to the right side of the screen.
This is the default video file or slide for the Library resource. Check one or more of the boxes under the Slide Show or TOTAL INFO-HD sections to select content. Check one or more of the boxes under the Slide Show or TOTAL INFO-HD sections to select content.
Zone 1 will play with pillars if using Zone Template 2. To display a specific slide, check Single Slide and then click Select Slide. To display a specific slide, check Single Slide and then click Select Slide.
Slides played in this zone must have dimensions of 1920 x 216 pixels. Slides played in this zone must have dimensions of 384 x 864 pixels.
A zoned version of the TOTAL INFO-HD weather category is available in this zone.

Once all selections have been made, save the preset by clicking Save at the top of the window and OK at the bottom to apply the preset to the playback format for the library resource.

NOTE: Saving Zone 2 and Zone 3 slides to separate user accounts is recommended.

Setting Up Virtual Channel Zones

The Virtual Channel is a widely used feature included with WebNEXUS™, the web-based companion application for UltraNEXUS-HD series products. It allows for looping playlists to fill any unscheduled time with predesignated slides or content. It’s often used in conjunction with TOTAL INFO-HD, our dynamic content delivery service that provides regularly updated video content.

UltraNEXUS-HD Zone Templates are also compatible with TOTAL INFO-HD, meaning you can have something like news updates or weather playing in one zone, while reserving the main zone for your primary scheduled programming.

Using UltraNEXUS-HD Zone Templates in Virtual Channel

Using UltraNEXUS-HD Zone Templates in Virtual Channel

After navigating to the Virtual Channel tab in WebNEXUS, click Advanced in the upper right corner, and then select the General tab. Navigate to the bottom Zone Mode box for display options. Select Use System Configured Mode to repeat whatever the last scheduled event’s configuration may have been. Selecting Always Run Virtual Channel in Mode, however, will yield a number of UltraNEXUS-HD Zone Templates:

  • 1 Zone (Main) — main screen without additional zones.
  • 2 Zones (Main/Bottom) — main screen and a lower third zone.
  • 3 Zones (Main/Bottom/Right) — all three zones.

Select the Zone Config tab to view any available slides for Zones 2 and 3. Clicking the respective checkbox next to categories will add the resource into the zone’s lineup.

NOTE: After saving changes, make sure to click Current near the top of the page, which will update the zone immediately. If left unclicked, the zone mode won’t change until the next item on the Virtual Channel list plays, or a force start is initiated from the WinLGX Control Panel.

Uploading Custom Zone Slides

If you have your own content to display, such as community announcements or brief schedules, UltraNEXUS-HD Zone Templates are the perfect way to represent that information to your audience without interrupting regular programming.

Custom slides can be generated with a graphics editor. Zones are compatible with JPEGS that are no larger than 2MB. When generating slides, keep the following dimensions in mind:

  • Lower third (Zone 2): 1920 x 216 pixels
  • Right side (Zone 3): 384 x 864 pixels

On the WebNEXUS Slides page, select the user folder you wish to upload the slide(s) to. Additional user folders can be created by adding users to the UltraNEXUS-HD’s system with the User Accounts window in WinLGX 7.

Click Upload near the top of the page and follow the instructions to upload slides. Once uploaded, use the procedures below to activate and add slides into your schedule and/or Virtual Channel setups.

Authorized and Enabled icons should appear to the right of each slide. A user with admin rights will see these icons appear automatically. If they are not present, refer to the individual in charge of admin controls to receive privileges.

NOTE: Slides will not appear in the slideshow without both icons present.

Custom Pillars for Zone 2 Mode

Using Zone 2 mode creates a “squeeze back” version of the primary playout in the main zone. This allows all of your content to remain in the same aspect ratio without losing any portions of the screen for additional zoned content. A zone with a squeeze back screen has some empty space on either side. The default image for the additional space is a plain black background, but a custom JPEG can replace it.

To generate a compatible file, create an image that is 1920 by 864 pixels. Name the file “default_pillars.jpg.”

In WinLGX, go to the Tools menu and select Storage Manager.

Choose Slides on the Storage Manager window for file listings and choose the public folder to find the original default_pillars.jpg.

Replace the original file with an updated version by navigating to its location on the PC using the left side of the Storage Manager window, right clicking the file, and selecting Copy.
