"LEIGHTRONIX equipment is great. It switches when it needs to, it hits at the exact same time every time, and it's very reliable. It's bulletproof, I think."
–Keith Kendrick (FCTV Editor and Videographer)
Palm Beach Gardens, FL—Before upgrading to the UltraNEXUS™ this year, Frenchman's Creek had one of the longest running NEXUS® video servers, using it continuously for nearly eight years. Frenchman's Creek witnessed firsthand the durability of the video server as they purchased one of the very first NEXUS video servers ever produced, and continued to use it until earlier this year.
The private country club of 600 homes purchased the unit in 2005, and when the NEXUS was finally powered off just a few months ago, it was not because the server was losing performance with age; Frenchman's Creek simply wanted to expand their capabilities. In fact, rather than take part in the trade-in program available to customers upgrading from a NEXUS to an UltraNEXUS, Frenchman's Creek's Editor and Videographer Keith Kendrick decided to purchase an UltraNEXUS and keep the NEXUS for potential future use.
"We still have the original NEXUS. It's back at our head-end and I just basically powered it down, and it's there in case I need to use it," Kendrick said.
Now that the country club has an UltraNEXUS, the amount of additional LEIGHTRONIX products their video server is compatible with has increased and Frenchman's Creek has purchased other necessary products and services to take advantage of their expanded capabilities.
To complement the UltraNEXUS, Kendrick has purchased PEG Central PRO™ , the web hosting and video-on-demand service with user authentication, the PEGvault-SD remote recorder, the PEGstream-SD2™ live streaming encoder and PEG Stream™ live streaming service.
"The reason we switched over to the UltraNEXUS was because . . . with the UltraNEXUS you can have everything," Kendrick said.
Convenience and Security
The community has a lot of seasonal residents and the addition of these new services has increased the availability of their content to residents. The most valuable asset for those out of town has been the addition of PEG Central PRO. With the video-on-demand, service residents who are away for the season can still access community content whenever they want over the Internet. However, with content being filmed in private residences from time to time, Kendrick didn't want non-residents to have access to the community's videos. For Frenchman's Creek, PEG Central PRO provided the convenience of making videos accessible over the Internet with the added security of user authentication and password protection.
"The response (to PEG Central PRO) has been positive," Kendrick said. "My problem was trying to host the programs and we didn't want to do the YouTube thing because then anyone in the world could watch it. I started researching a little more and found PEG Central PRO and decided to go with LEIGHTRONIX."
Next to Live
In addition to making sure the content was available to residents out of town, Kendrick also wanted to be sure everyone within the community had access to the town hall meetings, even if they couldn't attend. Utilizing the PEGvault-SD, Kendrick decided to PEGcast™ the meetings, providing Next to Live™ coverage over the community's cable channel.
Kendrick captures the meeting with a camera that is plugged directly into the PEGvault-SD. After about a minute of capture the PEGvault-SD immediately begins to transfer the file to the UltraNEXUS without interrupting the recording process. Once the UltraNEXUS receives the file from the PEGvault-SD, it begins to play the file Next to Live over the cable channel. This allows residents to watch the town hall meetings from their own homes with as little as a two minute delay.
"We try to keep up with the times and try to keep the members involved," Kendrick said. "They can watch from their homes and if they have a question they can call in to the club and get their question answered, especially with a town meeting or something. There might be a few minute delay but they can still get their question answered during the meeting."
Frenchman's Creek runs mainly original content which includes the town hall meetings as well as golf, tennis, and fitness tip videos and slides with important information for the community's members. Kendrick also utilizes the TOTAL INFO service to broadcast stock information, sports scores, weather, and other valuable information to the Frenchman's Creek residents.
Kendrick runs the same content "every hour on the hour" and loops it so that his residents know what to expect and when to expect it. With the WinLGX scheduling software, the seemingly tedious scheduling process is very quick and easy.
"I like the programming and how everything is done. You can just copy and paste for the whole day and once I get one day, I just copy and paste for the rest of the week and I have a week's programming," Kendrick said.
Kendrick said his happiness with LEIGHTRONIX products extends far beyond the scheduling software. In his eight years of working with LEIGHTRONIX products he has come to know them for being feature-rich, durable, and reliable.
"I am very impressed with the products. They're really built very solid. LEIGHTRONIX equipment is great. It switches when it needs to, it hits at the exact same time every time, and it's very reliable," Kendrick said. "It's bulletproof, I think."
Frenchman's Creek wanted to update their NEXUS video server to have live streaming and video-on-demand (VOD) streaming capabilities. The country club also wanted to restrict access to content so non-residents would not be able to view broadcasts or streamed content.
How It Works
The UltraNEXUS integrates seamlessly with the
PEGstream-SD2 and PEG Stream live streaming service as well as the PEG Central PRO VOD streaming service. This allows Kendrick to make content available on the broadcast channel and through the streaming services. Also, with the user authentication of PEG Central PRO, he can restrict access to residents only.
